It’s easy — we created a person for you to befriend, someone named John Newsjunk, who magically says exactly the same things that NewsJunk.com says through Twitter.

Here’s how to…

1. Search for “John Newsjunk”

2. “Add as friend”.

3. We’ll approve all friend requests.

There is an eighth way to follow NewsJunk: on Facebook!

2. Subscribe to the RSS feed.

3. Follow it on Twitter.

4. Read it on your iPhone.

6. Receive emails through Google Groups.

Displays links to the five most recent articles on the NewsJunk home page.

Russert honored on NewsJunk

We’ve used the background on the Twitter page for NewsJunk to dramatize the history of the news we’re so passionate about. We’ve run pictures of Teddy Roosevelt, the Kennedy-Nixon debate, and most recently the picture of Harry Truman holding the famous Dewey Beats Truman newspaper.

Today we switched the graphic to a dramatic headshot of newsman Tim Russert who died suddeny today. We’d like to say we knew him personally, but we didn’t. However we are students of his work, and his death today was historic, a passing of a political power in the middle of a Presidential campaign.

A place to comment on the Top-25 page

We’re interested in seeing how comments might work with NewsJunk.com, so to begin, we added the ability to comment at the bottom of the Top-25 page.

If you want to add a comment, just scroll to the bottom of the page, and add one. If you’re an authenticated member of Disqus.com, your comment will go through immediately, otherwise it goes into a queue for moderation.

To get things started I added an inital comment.

We’ve added a column to the Top-25 page that says how many hours the link has been on NewsJunk.com. This makes it easier to find the hot new stories.

NewsJunk gets podcasts!

The next step in the evolution of NewsJunk.com is to include selected political podcasts. They’ll appear in the normal flow of stories, and when they’re of special value, will be linked in the right margin. For example, I want to link to the podcasts of the three major Sunday morning political news shows every Sunday as they become available.

Here’s a screen shot that illustrates what a podcast looks like in the flow.

The first podcast to appear is ABC News Nightline, a daily 20-minute show, that is often about politics. Last night’s show is about Hillary Clinton’s concession, and a look inside the Obama organization.

Update: Podcasts are now included as enclosures in the NewsJunk RSS feed.

Top-25 most-read NewJunk pieces

Yesterday we added our own url-shortenter — it does the same thing as tinyurl.com, but also allows us to track the number of times each article was clicked-to from NewsJunk.com, and from Twitter and FriendFeed readers.

Right now it just shows the 25 most-read pieces for all time, but later we’ll have it do it for 24 hours or something like that. Learning as we go.
